The Issue

Every semester, in under three months, The Avenue creates a 140+ page print magazine with a team of over 250 members across different teams (Creative Direction, Editorial, Photography, Video, Styling, Hair and Makeup, Communications, etc). Each issue is thematically tied to a single word, for this issue we chose “VAIN”. We defined Vain as follow.

VAIN: Vanity is laden with negative connotation: taboo, a sin worthy of shame. But if there’s been a wagging finger at self-obsession for centuries, is it a temptation that perpetually stirs within us all, lying beneath a moral front until at last, the stage is ours? Behind a conceited façade is the longing to be seen. Perhaps it’s more than tunnel vision of the self, and instead a misguided effort for the validation we all seek. Afterall, a peacock fares his feathers for companionship — not applause.

My Role

In my fifth semester working with The Avenue Magazine, I served as the Director of Photography, for a second time! In this role, I concepted a cohesive visual theme for this 140 page print issue, led a team of 15 photographers through photographing individual article shoots in less than two weeks, and concepted and executed my own 12 page spread titled “EGO” (begins page 12) . I also wrote an article, title Olympia, drawing on my art history education.

The Issue

Each issue is thematically tied to a single word, for this issue we chose “BITE”.

BITE: To pierce, indulge in, or imitate a state of intense high energy and animal temptation; giving in to your basest urges — even if it means biting the hand that feeds you.

My Role

In my third semester working with The Avenue Magazine, I served as the Director of Photography. In this role, I concepted a cohesive visual theme for a 140 page print issue, led a team of 16 photographers through photographing 16 different article shoots in less than two weeks, and concepted and executed my own 12 page spread titled “ABSORB” (begins page 68) . I returned to this role, with the 20th issue, mentoring my team and crafting cohesive issues for our brand.
